3C Insider – An Appeal to Protect Entrepreneurs – Check out the latest Facebook and Google tools for small businesses

Happy Thursday!

Thanks for being part of the Connected Commerce Council (3C) and joining our fight to protect the digital interests of small businesses across America.

Here are 5 things you should know this week:

1. Keeping the ‘Entrepreneur’s Era’ Alive

Las Vegas small businessman Paul Serra is urging Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford and other elected officials to be cautious about regulating technology. In an op-ed for The Nevada Independent, he warned that the heavy hand of government could undermine the “entrepreneur’s era” that helped him build Suddora.com. “I hope they protect small businesses from becoming collateral damage,” he wrote.

2. Attorneys General Go After Google

The threat posed to small businesses that rely on digital technology is evident in a Washington Post profile of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. He is a key player in an antitrust probe of Google by attorneys general from 50 states and territories. The possible outcomes of the investigation range from standing down to forcing Google to sell parts of the company.

3. Big Tech Looks Out For Small Businesses This past week Facebook and Google unveiled new small business tools geared toward digitally empowered  entrepreneurs. Google recently unveiled two new advertising  techniques for small businesses. One targets “affinity audiences” with specific interests like the outdoors, while the other is aimed at “in-market audiences” that actively research and compare products. Facebook also introduced two tools to help small advertisers customize their stories and automate their Instagram replies.

4. It’s Hip to be Square Assistant

The mobile payments provider Square has enhanced its offerings for small businesses by giving them a new way to manage appointments. Through a new service called Square Assistant, companies can confirm appointments with their clients or allow them to reschedule or cancel via text message. Testing of the chatbot resulted in 10 percent fewer no-shows to appointments.

5. How to Market Your Business for Free

Small budgets are a fact of life for small business owners, but they have plenty of free options to find customers in the digital age, according to members of the Forbes Agency Council. The ideas range from publishing social media content and creating Google My Business listings to contributing expertise in Facebook groups and collaborating with local businesses on Instagram to gain exposure.
