3C PRESIDENT TESTIFIES IN FRONT OF SMALL BUSINESS COMMITTEE

“I’ve seen first-hand how access to, and adoption of, digital technologies and tools enables small businesses to integrate seamlessly with global giants, and thereby compete for customers by offering better products that deliver higher value for lower cost. Those experiences led me to found 3C and led me to this table today.”

Yesterday, I testified on behalf of digitally empowered small businesses at the House Small Business Committee hearing on digital entrepreneurship in rural areas. See my full testimony here.

Here are 5 things you should know for this week:

    • NEW REPORT: Small businesses are worried about new privacy regulations hurting bottom line
Earlier this week, 3C released a new research report, Small Businesses Data Regulation and Responsibility, exploring small and medium-sized business owners’ (SMBs) attitudes toward data regulations. The report highlights both the willingness of SMBs to comply with smart regulation and an understanding of the importance of data security, but a general concern among SMBs that policymakers cannot write and enact effective laws governing data.
    • Washington State Senate passed data privacy, right-to-delete legislation
The Washington State Senate overwhelmingly approved a sweeping data privacy bill in a 46-1 vote last week. The bill requires big data-holding businesses to disclose to consumers what data they hold, and guarantee a consumer’s right to edit and delete data about them held by such businesses. The legislation also tackled the issue of facial recognition software with a provision requiring businesses to post signs disclosing their use of such technology.
    • NEW PODCAST: How to protect customer data in your small business
Senior Advisor for privacy at the White House, Marc Groman, has recommendations for small business owners to implement to ensure their customers’ data is secure.
    • Get paid for your data? California governor wants tech companies to show you the money
After Governor Newsom mentioned brought up “data dividends” in his State of the State speech last month, California lawmakers are now considering the feasibility of such a measure. BUT experts are concerned that the initiative could hurt the poor and incentivize tech companies from leaving the state costing the state far more than they bargained for.
    • Facebook is reorienting towards a privacy-focused approach
Last week, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg announced the company will reorient its focus toward privacy. In an essay posted to his own Facebook account, Zuckerberg said the company would transition from a “town square” to a “living room”, meaning the tech giant will shift from being a social network where people share information with large groups to a service that people can use to communicate and connect in smaller groups With a privacy-focused approach, Zuckerberg believes will allow for more authentic, intimate safe and secure interactions.
