Connected Commerce Council Response to APRA Markup in House Committee on Energy and Commerce
WASHINGTON (June 27, 2024): Connected Commerce Council Executive Director Rob Retzlaff today issued the following statement ahead of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce vote on the American Privacy Rights Act (APRA) H.R. 8188.
“APRA’s sweeping new definition of ‘sensitive data’ will dramatically limit small businesses’ ability to advertise, find customers, and drive sales. The bill’s proponents either don’t understand how digital marketing works, or they’re simply willing to accept the harm that APRA’s extreme new data restrictions will cause small businesses.
“Small business owners had hoped for a national data privacy law that would help them thrive by offering clear, reasonable privacy standards and fixing the current patchwork of state laws. Instead, they’re getting legislation that will hurt them by overregulating the data that powers their marketing, advertising, and growth. Congress needs to go back to the drawing board.”
