In search of a creative outlet beyond her corporate career, marketing consultant Erica Goldstein launched The Blank Canvas Company in 2014 — sharing and selling her colorful, hand-painted designs on Instagram. What started as a passion project soon gained traction, and Erica started selling at local markets and pop-up events in 2018, steadily growing her customer base. When she lost her job in 2021, she seized the opportunity to focus on her business full-time, teaching creative workshops locally and launching a seasonal retail booth at the SoWa Winter Market and later the Snowport Holiday Market. She also began selling online, expanding her reach from the Boston area to customers nationwide.
Today, Erica sells vibrant paintings, prints, cards, planters, and themed sticker packs — many centered around themes of feminism and empowerment, as well as bold statement pieces that add personality to any space. She also creates custom pieces, like pet portraits, and offers visual branding services, like logo design, working closely with clients to bring their visions to life. To date, Erica has hand-crafted artwork and personalized gifts for thousands of customers and collaborated with more than 80 brands, including HomeGoods.
Selling online — through Instagram and a Shopify-powered site — has been vital to The Blank Canvas Company’s success. Instead of relying solely on local markets and pop-ups, Erica is able to reach customers across the country who are searching for vibrant custom artwork that reflects their personality and style. Her online store lets her showcase new products, accept new custom orders, and get direct feedback through polls and community engagement.
