After Battling Lyme Disease, New York Mom Creates a Safer Way to Repel Ticks

After a harrowing experience with neurological Lyme disease, Lisa-Jae Eggert was determined to protect herself and her family from the kind of tick-borne illness that had upended her life. But the chemicals in most insect repellants made her symptoms worse, triggering neurological flare-ups, so she decided to create her own solution.

In 2018, Lisa-Jae founded 3 Moms Organics in East Hampton, New York, and developed TickWise, a plant-based, toxin-free insect repellent made with natural ingredients like geranium, cedarwood, and citronella oils. After early success selling through retail stores, Lisa-Jae was inspired to start selling on Amazon — which now accounts for about 80% of 3 Moms’ sales.

Digital tools play a key role in 3 Moms’ growth. Lisa-Jae uses Fulfillment by Amazon to handle storage, shipping, and customer service — saving time and keeping costs manageable as her business grows. She also uses Meta and Amazon’s data-powered ads to reach customers likely to be interested in her product.

After early difficulties navigating product registration and regulatory hurdles, Lisa-Jae became an outspoken advocate for small businesses. She’s particularly interested in helping lawmakers understand how broad “surveillance pricing” proposals and other digital regulations could make it hard for small sellers to reach customers and compete with bigger businesses. “My mission has always been to help protect families,” she says. “That’s why I worry when well-intentioned proposals aimed at stopping bad actors are drafted so broadly that they unintentionally make it harder for small businesses like mine to reach the people who need our products.”
