AI-Powered Business Helps Companies Make Sense Of Complex Laws
In 2019, longtime politics and policy enthusiast Pat Utz started his AI-powered firm, Abstract, to help people understand how complex legislative changes could impact their businesses.
Today, Abstract uses advanced AI to analyze proposed legislative and regulatory changes, helping clients better prepare for likely risks and opportunities. With a growing roster of clients, the company now includes 12 team members — and its innovative work has received national recognition.
While AI powers Abstract’s technology, digital tools help the startup power its growth. Pat uses Google and LinkedIn ads to target the right potential customers about Abstract’s specialized services, and saves money by skipping companies unlikely to be interested.
However, proposed California privacy laws threaten to make it harder for small businesses and startups like Pat’s to reach the right customers. The state may soon require businesses to display various data-collection opt-out pop-up screens on their websites — aggravating customers, who may hastily click “yes” or “no” on the screens without understanding the consequences, and likely making data-powered marketing and advertising far less effective.
Pat says lawmakers need to understand the implications of their proposed rules. “If we can’t tell the right people about our business, it will be extremely difficult to grow,” he says.
