AI Puts Sophisticated Digital Advertising Within Small Businesses’ Reach

Komal Singh, Founder, 4XDigital | Washington, DC

In 2024, I founded 4XDigital, an AI-powered advertising platform that enables small businesses to create and manage cross-channel digital ad campaigns. I’d spent years developing ad technologies for Amazon’s small sellers, and had learned two key lessons: first, advertising is an extremely effective tool for small businesses — if it’s done well. Second, most small businesses don’t have the time, money, or expertise it takes to plan and run effective ad campaigns, putting them at a serious disadvantage against big competitors with big marketing budgets.

4XDigital’s system of purpose-built AI agents supports every element of small businesses’ ad campaigns — helping to close that resource gap, and empowering small businesses to grow and succeed. One agent analyzes a client’s business inputs (e.g., industry, goals, budget, and positioning) to determine an appropriate campaign strategy. A second agent generates tailored creative assets, including visuals and copy. After launch, additional agents monitor performance data and make ongoing optimizations based on predefined parameters.

Our system allows small businesses to deploy and refine digital advertising campaigns within hours, rather than weeks — and at significantly lower cost than traditional agency-led models.

Critically, however, we also make human oversight a central part of our campaign-design process. I tell my team that AI is an excellent navigator — but people are the drivers. At the end of the day, we are responsible for what our AI system does and how it performs for our customers. At every juncture, we make sure an expert reviews what the system is doing, how it’s performing, and whether its recommendations make sense. By pairing AI’s hyper-efficiency with our team’s judgment and knowledge, we’re able to provide our customers with customized advertising services that would otherwise be far beyond their reach.

I think AI is the best thing ever to happen to small businesses, because it puts so many tools at their fingertips. People can do a lot more with a lot less — and that unlocks so many new opportunities. At the same time, though, I think AI makes human judgment, creativity, and relationship-building more important than ever. That’s because only a person can really understand the customers who come in and out of their shop: who they are, why they’re there, and how they react to something like a new flavor or decor. AI can’t replace that understanding.

Still, many small-business owners express apprehension about adopting AI-powered tools. They see the tools’ value, but they’re worried about things like security and liability risks. Lawmakers could help alleviate those concerns — and encourage AI experimentation and adoption — by establishing clear, sensible, consistent guardrails.

In the bigger picture, though, we have to remember that AI is neither a replacement for human knowledge, nor the solution to all our problems. Instead, it’s a powerful tool. As we move forward in the AI age, the key to success will lie in understanding how to leverage that tool while also staying creative, exercising smart judgment, and nurturing human connections.
