Chicago Business Owner Shares AI Insights With Congressional Small Business Committee
WASHINGTON (July 15, 2026) — Anthony Qaiyum, owner of Chicago-based Merz Apothecary, yesterday testified before the House Small Business Committee, explaining how AI-powered tools help his small business grow, compete, and create jobs.
Qaiyum offered his comments during a hearing titled “AI on Main Street: How AI is Shaping the Future of Small Business,” which explored AI’s benefits and risks for small businesses, as well as how Congress can help support responsible AI adoption among small businesses.
“AI gives small businesses like ours affordable access to capabilities that were once available only to large corporations with multimillion-dollar budgets,” Qaiyum told lawmakers. “Using AI, my team is able to go after bigger opportunities and…grow.”
Founded in 1875, Merz Apothecary offers a large selection of natural and hard-to-find health, beauty, and personal care products.
Qaiyum explained that AI-powered tools have helped him dramatically improve his company’s operational efficiency and capacity, allowing him to hire 10 new employees since adopting the tools. “We see AI as a creator of opportunity,” he said.
Qaiyum encouraged lawmakers to enact national AI and data privacy frameworks that promote responsible AI use while helping small businesses leverage new technologies to grow and succeed.
“For 151 years, Merz Apothecary has adapted to changing technologies and markets. AI is the newest chapter in that story, helping us compete, innovate, hire, and better serve our customers. I hope Congress will pursue policies that keep AI tools accessible for American small businesses and make it easier for millions more to adopt them.”
