Maryland Laundry Business Helps Busy Families Across the DC Area

Five years ago, Hyacinth Tucker earned $20 helping a friend with her family’s laundry. Word of her services quickly spread among friends and neighbors, and within months she had a steady stream of customers. Realizing she’d tapped into a major need, Hyacinth in 2022 launched The Laundry Basket, a Bowie, Maryland-based business offering full-service laundry pickup, cleaning, and delivery across the Washington metropolitan area.

Today, The Laundry Basket washes nearly 7,000 pounds of laundry each month for busy individuals and families, as well as for gyms, spas, medical practices, and government facilities throughout the region. The company also partners with local shelters and schools to help ensure residents and children have clean clothes — and the confidence and dignity that comes with them.

Digital tools, including personalized discounts and promotions, help The Laundry Basket connect with new customers and grow. For example, if someone visits the company’s website or adds a service package to their cart without completing a purchase, The Laundry Basket might send a discount offer encouraging them to give the service a try.

Worryingly, however, Maryland recently passed a bill, HB 895, that could make those personalized discounts harder to offer. The law requires warning labels alongside certain digital discounts and promotions — which Hyacinth thinks could confuse customers and undermine trust.

“We use personalized discounts to bring in customers and build loyalty,” Hyacinth says. “I’m concerned that these new requirements could make that harder, slowing our growth and hindering our success.”
