Engineer-Turned-Entrepreneur Aims to Make Sustainable Living Easy
After years working as a chemical engineer in the oil and gas industry, Mohamad Sam started thinking about the environmental impact of everyday products — and wanted to do something about it. In 2015, he launched Purifyou, a Houston-based business that makes durable, reusable everyday products. One of his first designs was a sleek glass water bottle, which quickly became a customer favorite — and from there, the brand took off.
Today, Purifyou offers a range of eco-friendly essentials, including glass water bottles and tumblers, mesh produce bags, reusable straws, snack bags, and baskets. The business has been featured in publications including Buzzfeed, Good Housekeeping, and Bon Appétit — and donates a portion of profits to fund wells in impoverished communities lacking access to clean water.
Digital tools have played a major role in Purifyou’s success. The company found early traction on Amazon, where several products quickly became best-sellers; today, over 95% of its sales come from online marketplaces. Mohamad has also used a mix of digital advertising platforms — including TikTok, Google Ads, and Amazon Ads — to reach customers and grow.
A strong advocate for policies that help small businesses succeed in the digital economy, Mohamad recently spoke out against a new tax on the fees Texas online sellers pay marketplaces like Amazon. “A tax on marketplace fees could be crushing,” he told lawmakers. “In today’s uncertain economy, Texas’ digital entrepreneurs need a boost from our leaders — not a new tax.”
Mohamad says digital tools empower small, niche businesses to succeed by helping them find customers across the country. “Our goal is to reduce waste and help people live healthier, more sustainable lives,” Mohamad says. “As a small family business, digital tools let us punch above our weight, and help us reach people who care about living better and making a difference.”
